Scotland’s Carstairs Junction now with enhanced rail freight capacity

After an extensive twelve-week phased closure, Carstairs Junction, on the West Coast Main Line in Scotland, has reopened to all traffic. The closure provided the infrastructure agency Network Rail with an opportunity to invest over two million pounds (2,32 million euros) in improving safety and performance. The remodelling and upgrading of the critical junction have not only benefited passenger services but also brought significant advantages to rail freight operations, including the capacity to handle the longest sanctioned trains on the network, 775m in length.
